Dell Digital Jukebox

Well, I was cleaning up my room the other day and found an old Dell Digital Jukebox lying around and was wondering what I should do with it. I was at first thinking about installing linux onto it, but then decided to ask if you guys had any better ideas on hacking the Dell, whether it be soft mod or hard mod.

Mechanical Cover Flow

I was thinking of a project for a type of shelf for your CD jewel cases. It would be a way of presenting CD covers in a similar way to iTunes 7's cover flow. (see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/CoverFlow_Screenshot.png) You could mount the cases and have a slider to flip through your CDs. Anyone know how this could be achieved?

Sound Sensative LED

I wanted to make an LED board that I could wear on my shirt or hat that can sense bass sounds (like in and around 80Hz). I play House music, and it would be an awesome visual aspect, and wondered if someone had an instructable on it. Thanks

Light(ish) and non flexible.

I am toying with the idea of putting together a non flexible notebook case. I really liked the look of my Timbuk2 sleeve and other sleeves out there, but they always leave out adequate support to prevent flex when in a messenger bag. I am pretty sure that being flexed across my back while cycling with a good amount of weight pressing on it killed the motherboard (twice!) on my old notebook and would like to avoid it again. I need some materials suggestions though. I need a non-flexible material to act as plates to be sewn into the outside covering of the case. Ceramic plate would be ideal, but the things that I have found are anti-ballistic and ridiculously expensive. Plate steel would work but it is heavy. Anyone out there with experience with plate steel or aluminum that can tell me how thin I can go without flex, or maybe some advice on materials that I haven't thought of?

I am really interested in the possibilities of cheap instrument wireless, and thought it might be doable to hack a Bluetooth headset/receiver for short-range wireless. Has anyone ever hacked Bluetooth before?

Camera Flash Circuit

I know that it's pretty easy to cannibalize a camera flash to do some pretty simple things...but i find it difficult (probably by design) to solder things to these prebuilt boards (especially the "charge button"...that things not built for soldering)...i was wondering if someone could work up a circuit schematic with part numbers (or at least part identification) for a flash circuit like those in a disposable camera...so that someone could build it from scratch in whatever form factor they choose.

Eco-conscious: -167 Watts and No Iron Wrinkle Solution

First, sorry for the blurry pictures - I've changed some sort of setting on my camera and now it's very difficult to get a good image without a tripod.I like canida's segments and thought I'd throw in some of my little bits. Not as significant, but in terms of consumption, every little bit helps ;)First, do you really need 180 watts of light in the bathroom? Personally, most of the time I'm either in the shower or taking care of nature's call as opposed to actually using the mirror.Estimating 2 hours/day usage. We save a little more than 10KwH monthly. So about $1 a month (this bulb pays for itself in 2.5 months).Second. I don't like my dryer. Some of my clothing is air dried or only partially dried by machine. Wrinkles are a problem for me. So my anti-iron solution is a hook in the bathroom. After a few showers (or one way too hot shower), the moist air will release most of the wrinkles. If you really need every wrinkle out - then fine, go ahead and fire up the iron. An alternative to an iron is a steamer. I have the kind that you add a little salt to the water and uses much less power than a conventional iron (this statement was verified empirically).Perhaps there should be a group :) "Semi-Off Grid" :P

Powering a device from radio waves?

I was just curious, but I was told someone was arrested fpr powering their house from a tv signal (illegal I know), but I was wondering if there would be any case where it would be legal to utilise my own RF signal as the source of power for some devices, and how is it possible?

Polishing large stones

I am looking for some advice on polishing large stones. I am from New Jersey, and there is a plentiful supply of bog iron. I can't dig a hole in the ground in my yard deeper than 8 inches without coming across some of it. Some stones are small but most wiegh about 20 to 30 lbs. I have several that are at least 150 lbs. I have tried to use them in as many ways as I can think of to decorate my yard. But bog iron is not always an attractive stone. I have seen some small polished samples on the internet and I like the way they turned out. I would like to try and polish some of my larger stones. I could do it by hand but it might take months or even years. I'm not sure what a sandblaster would do to it, but I don't own one and am not looking to buy one. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for a faster way to polish a large stone. Thanks in advance.

Electronic help required - independently powering a CCFL

Hi, a friend of mine recently had a problem with a laptop where the screen went dim. I tried the obvious, screen settings (it didn't have a monitor swith-off button :S ) and reset the bios with no luck, so I thought that the problem was probably related to either the cable, the inverter or the backlight. I tried a new lcd screen with a known-working backlight and it failed to work. I also purchased a new cable and a new inverter but the backlight still failed to turn on. This now points me in the direction of a motherboard problem. I am going to take a multimeter and test the voltages going from the inverter and to the inverter. If these appear to be correct, is there any way that I can get the backlight to turn on? If the voltages are correct I would assume it's something to do with the light control and stuff, and wonder if I was to say, disconnect all the wires from the inverter but dc supply and ground (and I think there is a connection to the oscillator?), would it work? If there is no voltage going to the inverter, does anyone know how I could power the backlight independently? I would imagine it would take some sort of power regulator and maybe a separate inverter? Thanks

help with a chaser board

Hi all i am very very new to all of this and i am working to light up a model if you can help me i would be very great full. Ok so i want to connect Led 1 threw 5 to the 555 timer and 6and 7 to be solid on. The resistors are 1/4 W 5% 470R OHM I was told to put the resistors on the negative point of the LED for the chasers. Do i need to put some on the Solid ones? I am using 4 AA Batteries for power and that gives me 6V. All of the lights will be in a serial circuit. The chasers Led are 3mm 5.0V @ 20mA The solid Led are 3mm 3.6V @ 20MA The fun part: How do i connect it all together? I bought a Breadboard and i am trying to figure it out lol !!! Now i was told that the timer chip is to bridge the gap image 2 That i also has to connect the the bottom and top of the gap like so image 3 OK so on the breadboard the resistors go parallel? from the 555 chip image 4? And the Led goes like this for the chaser image 5 ? Any help would be great and thanks

Eco-conscious: Compact Fluorescents

My friend Rawhide did a decent bit of research into the best type of compact fluorescent lightbulb, so I'm sharing is findings here. Do you have anything to add?Rawhide on compact fluorescents:In all my web searching I couldn't find a truly exhaustive comparison on lightbulb stats. Even Energyfederation.org, which was the most comprehensive, didn't list the CRI for all of its bulbs. What I did realize was that the "bright white" bulbs I bought from Home Depot were of the wrong color temperature to mix with incandescents and that is why they looked so cold. I also found a couple of people who really liked N:Vision, the Home Depot brand. So I decided to give Home Depot another shot and exchanged the bright whites for soft whites. Curiously, when I went back the CF bulbs had a big display that wasn't there the week before with the bulbs I wanted in $9 4-packs, which was much cheaper than the individual bulbs.I replaced all the bulbs in our living room and dining room and I (and the nameless other) find the light quality to be quite good---it wasn't possible to distinguish the CF from the incandecent bulbs once they warmed up. If you look at the light in the room as a whole, there is the slightest bit of 'vibration', but it's really not noticable unless you're looking for it.Net savings: 600W->140W to light the two rooms. Awesome. Finally, as a coda to my quest for compact flourescents, I learned that Massachusetts is offering a $2 rebate per package for Energy Star lights and that Home Depot also sells 6-packs for $10. So, you can get 60w replacement bulbs for $1.30 rather than $4 or $5 you sometimes see. http://www.myenergystar.com/rebates.aspx Retailers need to supply the coupons, which are instant rebates at the register. There are also bigger rebates, like $75 off a dryer and $20 off a torchiere light fixture.

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators

Implantable Cardioverter DefibrillatorsI just saw an advertisement for this thing..... It's different than a pacemaker and to be honest, I had no idea such things existed.... It's interesting (for me at least) because my family history has this problem among a few other heart problems. My grandfather had bypass surgery when it was new (late 60's/early 70's).... three of them over his lifetime - the third heat attack (I think it was #3) is what got him.Just exciting medical stuff that for some reason they felt it necessary to advertise as if it was a new drug o.0

Low voltage Push Solenoid

Hey everyone... I've been trying to find a DC push solenoid powered by 12V or less (I think 9V would be best). It needs to be able to push down on point and shoot camera trigger so I'm estimating about a half pound push minimum. I saw some time lapse modifications on the Make: photo pool. I'm going to do the same, but with simplicity in mind :P

I want to make a big torch that lasts a long time and is inexpensive. Does anybody have any ideas? I saw a pretty neat torch on this website but I don't think that it would last for hours.

Adult Swim and Interference Inc - This NOT the work of the GRL

An advertising agency managed to shut Boston down with a guerrilla marketing campaign gone bad. Inspired by the GRL (the people behind LED Throwies), Interference, Inc, whose website appears to be blank right now, created some LED-based graffiti to promote a cartoon. Our friends at the GRL were not impressed, and posted a response here.Like a dog in heat, a producer/reporter from Inside Edition tracked me down earlier today hoping to find, and I quote, "a techie willing to explain these light-bulbs attached to magnets that are all over Boston." I tried to explain that the GRL and LED Throwies had nothing to do with it, but perhaps subtlety is lost when you're hot on the trail of a story. Carl, if you're out there, these are the links you weren't interested in getting from me. The people who actually are behind this posted the video below (which was removed by the original author, but reposted by the GRL). I grabbed it from here. There are lots of very interesting questions around this whole issue: When does art become advertising; how can we as "techies" educate those around us as to what's a bomb and what's art; and who is responsible for actions like these that shut down a city? The artists? The corporation that put them up to it? The government for making itself and the public so paranoid? In any case, join me in watching how this unfolds.
