Introduction: How to Make Urine Deterrant

I have a dog who is very obsessed with peeing on the same spot on my rug. No matter how I train him not to, he still can’t help it. So I end up having to wash the rug over and over. I believe it’s not just me who has this problem, many dog owners try so hard to seek out ways to prevent dogs from peeing on their carpets or rugs.

Few weeks ago, my friends told me a little trick that she does! She told me to spray water that is mixed with lemon juice, white vinegar and baking soda on the carpet or rugs to keep dogs away. So I tried once and it really works!

Step 1: Materials Needed

A spray bottle (If you don’t want to buy new bottles, you can just recycle used spray bottle)

One Funnel (It is not necessary but makes this so much easier.)

A small cup

Two Fresh Lemons

A table spoon of both White Vinegar and Baking Soda

And about 1 ½ of cup of warm water

Step 2: Comining Water With Lemon Juice

First you need to pour about a cup and a half of water into the container.

Next, cut and squeeze the juice out of lemons into the small cup.

Some people ask me if they can substitute lime for lemon, I tried it and it was a mistake! Unlike lemon juice, lime just is very sticky and leaves a residue on the carpet that makes it very uncomfortable to walk on.

Step 3: Adding Vinegar and Baking Soda

Add the vinegar to this cup, and then baking soda.

White vinegar and baking soda also have great cleaning effects, so you’ll be cleaning your carpet of odors, while keep your dog at bay.

Step 4: Stirring and Pouring

Last, you need to stir and pour the mixed fluid into spray bottle via funnel, then give it a light shake to incorporate the ingredients.

Step 5: Dos and Don'ts

1. The effects of mixed fluid does not last an entire week, so you might have to spray it twice to three times a week to make sure your dog can always smell it. You don’t have to spray the whole carpet because it will take lots of fluid, you just spray the spots dog always pees on.

2. Since lemon is a fruit, it is very necessary to keep the mixed fluid in the fridge to keep it from going bad, it’ll also keep the mixture lasting a lot longer. A bottle for mix fluid lasts about 2-3 weeks.

3. I can’t guarantee that this method will work for all dogs. So if your dogs don’t buy it, you might want to figure out other solutions!

I wish I had seen this before I tried to make my own solution, I used lemon concentrate in and now I have that sticky residue on my carpet! Any suggestions on how to get rid of the residue?

Wikihow says cats do not like the smell of vinegar or ammonia so they will likely soil the area in which it is applied.
