Plasma Arc Waste Disposal

I was watching the local news earlier... and they started talking about a new waste plant being built in Ft. Pierce, Florida.Basically, they vaporize the trash and sewage sludge under a vacuum, and use the by product gases as fuel for the plant and power turbines. Steam is going to power a local juice plant. Solid by product (rocks and such) can be used for construction etc.On top of that, the by product gas - when burned - is cleaner than burning natural gas or garbage. Even if you think climate change is a myth, I think you can appreciate cleaner air to breath :P This plant is going to eat up the local landfills too :)I just thought it was pretty cool. This is the first plant in the United States and the third in the world (other two are in Japan and are much smaller).Comments?

Looking To Pick Your Skilled Brains

Advice on best how to make a piezometer out of readily available hardware store parts without use of any power tools and access to only a very few hand tools. Basically a piezometer is a clear, straight plastic tube that you attach to the outside of (in my case) a plastic 250 Liter rain barrel (about 1.5 feet diameter, 4 feet high) from top to bottom. The top is exposed to the open air, while the bottom feeds into the bottom of the barrel (by going through the side very close to the bottom). It needs to have a diameter of about 1/2 inch, be very solid, straight and secure, and a 'water level mark' must be etchable in it somehow to indicate the normal level of water inside the barrel when the barrel is full (full means a few inches before the absolute rim of the barrel). The barrel is filled with gravel at the bottom, sand on top, and enough room for a 12" waterhead above the sand. I'm using it as a slow sand filter (SSF). The idea is that the pressure of water at the bottom of the barrel fills the tube up to the watermark against the action of the atmospheric pressure forcing the level in the tube down below the watermark. When the level of the water in the tube is about 15 inches below the water mark, it means the water pressure at the bottom of the barrel has decreased to the point where the sand in it needs to be cleaned (no water getting through). Any ideas will be greatly rewarded in the afterlife. Thanks!

Looking for a small LCD to use with and LED matrix

I'd like to make my own small HDR display. I'm having a little trouble googling a transparent monochrome LCD screen to overlay on an LED matrix. Anyone know a good cheap source? Here's the basic concept:http://www.brightsidetech.com/tech/overview.phpWatch the powerpoint and skip to the display section.I figure I can use this cheap LED matrix to at least get some color:http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=682Anyone know a better color LED matrix?(I'd prefer an Isometric array myself)I'm principally trying to find a transparent monochrome LCD screen to modulate the LED matrix.

Misspellings: An annoyance or serrious problem

I am getting sick of seeing people ragging on about misspellings to the point where I feel it has gotten out of hand. I belive the new policy should be people who submit new instructables should try their best to spell everything right and if someone does come across a misspelling to simply let it go. Anyone agree?

All instructables formatting codes

Does anybody know a place (or can list themselves) that lists all the codes used to format the text, post videos, links, et cetera? I just want to know as i'm making an offline editor for myself (mostly as a practice project) and don't know all the codes. It's a live editor so as you type you can see a preview of it to the right. At the moment i have to add "/" to end the command, but I will add an exporter to remove them automatically. Currently all i have implemented are the ones shown here;

Recharging batteries while in a project

So I'm thinking of a few projects using rechargeable batteries and I wanted to try something. I want to have a power cord attached to the project that can plug in to a standard AC socket to recharge the batteries. I have no experience with rechargeable batteries beyond putting them into the box and sticking it in the wall. I want to be able to hook up 6 AA rechargeables and have no idea what DC voltage I should be using. I have an old charger for a two way radio that runs at 9V and was designed to charge the 4 AAA batteries inside. Would this work? It would be nice because it's small and even has an LED to indicate the charging status. Is this possible and is there anything other than DC voltage I need to worry about? Also, is it safe to hook that up as long as there's a switch to disconnect the batteries from the project? Any help is appreciated!

Motionactivated camera that sends pic via phone???

Excuse me I'm green here but my brother said this is the place to ask... There are a lot of game cameras for capturing game pics. These are set up around game trails, feeders ect to capture pics of animals(bigfoots) coming and going. They are set in the field and checked periodicly. No big deal if you live close by but there are areas I'd like to check on 100 miles from me. Plus these cames are suject to being stolen. Some one is now making one that send the pic to a website via a Tmoble acct. A great idea, pics are sent when they are taken ( a thief cannot walk home with is photo under his arm). But... $500?? plus acct. activation? and a serparate website? nuts In reviewing the stuff here and failing to find or ask properly...i know there is talent here to create somthing that will work and send the pics directly to an individual email acct. The cheepest digital game cam is $60 at walmart, I figure a cheep pay as you go cell phone and viola! except I'm better at fixing boats. If anyone can put me on the right track to simplifing this I would appriciate it. Thanks cw

Potential Instructable - Automatic Security Cam for your Macbook

I saw this on the Make blog and thought it would make a good Instructable. Anyone up for the challenge? It seems like most of the information is there in the comments:http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2007/01/automatic_secur.html?CMP=OTC-0D6B48984890"This came out a few months ago, but I just found this on Flickr while researching the upcoming weekend project. It's a way of automating your isight to take a picture 60 seconds after you, or anyone, open it up. Flickr member omegastation set this up before sending off his macbook for fixing. In a worst case scenario, if someone stole your macbook, you could have your macbook send you pictures of them.I set this up and I made this little automator program that takes and sends the pictures, but I don't have a lot of experience programming from a terminal and I got hung up on step 5. If someone could make a little screencast of how to set this up, that would be awesome. This seems like it would be a simple first programming project!Update: Check the comments for super explicit instructions... with these instructions, anyone can program this now! Thanks Omegastation! HELP! Electronic sequencer for vintage door chime.

Seeking any manner of help in making an electronic sequencer for a multi-note doorbell. I restore old door chimes and one particular model from the 1940's-1950's has an electromechanical linear distributor that works as the chime sequencer. It has a limited life expectancy- long since expired- and it defies repair. You can see details of this device by looking up patent number 2245443. The task to be done though is just like that of any more common chime sequencer that uses a rotary distributor. The idea is to replace the electromechanical mess with modern electronics to time the power sequence to three or four 16v or 24v solenoids. Looking for any help… guidance, advice, moral support... but mostly hoping to find someone who can design and build a few of these, as I am largely clueless about electronic design.

Make water balloons explode in mid-air

Hello to all, This is my first post, so if I make a mistake I apologize in advance. I am looking for a way to make water balloons explode in mid-air. It must be safe (i.e. I am not going to shoot them out of the sky with some sort of projectile) and I would prefer not to utilize some form of explosive device. I would prefer something I could time and continuously reproduce. Whether it be an apparatus or a chemical reaction. It has to be safe to be done around children, environmentally friendly, in other words I don't want to cause anyone or anything harm other than the balloon itself. I would like to be able to make the balloons burst at either a specific time after launching or throwing or have them burst after reaching a certain height in the air. If I can figure out a way to this I will gladly share my whole idea. Thanks in advance.

MIG Soldering Iron Concept

The plan is to modify a existing soldering iron remove the tip have a small nozzle at the front (made of a thick disk of metal, drilled with a normal bit until a small hole is poked, thus making a cone nozzle)(thinner than what i put in the picture, because the taper should be 45 degrees) the area where the tip is screwed in to will be where the solder liquidfies a hole will be drilled above that for a flexible copper tube to guide solder in the tube will be heat sinked so the solder only liquidfies when it is near the chamber the solder will be feed with some sort of unreeling mechanism or something that is controlled by a button the feed will be guided to the copper tube via another sort of tubing the pressure of adding solder will force the liquid solder out the nozzle the goal is to have a tiny drop of liquid solder, small enough for average through hole soldering, come out with a press of a button. flux should be applied before. does anybody see anything wrong that could happen with my concept? does anybody have other ideas and suggestions? had this been thought of before?

Welcome to the instructazine project!!

What is Instructazine you all say? Well it’s pretty much this… A magazine by the makers for the makers There should be a little section in this website that contains 3 subsections... > A instructazine development wiki > The current issue of Instructazine > And an archive of past Instructazines The Making Of Instructazine: Radical eh? Well the open sourced bit of this idea is that anybody within this community (that’s you and me!) can contribute towards the next issue of the Instructazine. This is much like wikipedia, but working towards the next magazine. Once everyone has contributed within the deadlines, others would start compile these pages together and released it in multiple formats. (Html, Pdf, Jpg, A physical hard copy magazine) The Link System: The link to the current issue is provided by Instructables free of charge. However if you want to support Instructables, it would be very nice if you could order a physical copy of the Instructazine, in which you are paying for the print and an optional donation to Instructables depending on how much you think you should donate. (Although I personally wouldn’t mind if there is a minimum of a dollar donation) The Layout: - Front cover -Community editorial - Useful stuffs - things that can actually make life easier - Food - thats making stuff for your tummy - Microprojects (Microinstructables- stuff that you can do less then or a couple of weeks) (there was a suggestion by Dogsrcool2me to call this 20-20, a project that takes less then 20 minutes for $20) - For kids - have fun but safe and educational project for kids. (The howtoons shall come on later issues) - A calendar of important events pertaining to makers and this community - A small interesting story by a maker. (Near the end cover page) - The end cover of the magazine Sounds cool, huh? Well you can help make it a reality.

Wireless SNES Controller

I found this guide to make a wireless NES controller, but it has a few drawbacks. The range is only 3-4 feet and you can only push one button at a time. It got me thinking, and what I would like to do is make my SNES controller wireless, possibly with an IR transmitter and reciever. I would think that this will take some programing to encode and decode the signal. I want to learn as much as I can from this project, but I don't know where to start. Can anyone help?

TECH WE WANT!

Well in this group, we are all about technology that spies would use and things that would be considered "Spy Stuff". Anything made here doesn't have to be something spies actually use, it could be stuff that you think a spy would use. And please no cans on a string. Cool stuff like laser microphones, and stuff like that, most anything is accepted.
