What kinds of contests do YOU want to see on Instructables? Answered

Hi everyone! As we're planning contests for the next year, we wanted to get suggestions and feedback on the types of contests we're running. :D

Is there a contest we ran years ago you'd like to see again?
Any contests you're sick of?
A weekly challenge you'd like us to expand on?
Do you want the contests to be more specific or more open ended?

We're trying to shake things up in contest-land - so any and all suggestions are welcome! I'm especially interested in what types of tech contests you guys would like to see, as well as ideas for food contests.

P.S. For anyone wondering about weekly challenges - we're still trying to figure out a way to do it that makes it easy for you guys to enter and easy for the editors here to run. But I promise we are discussing it! :)

Have prize suggestions? Check this topic.
Want to get a preview of some of our upcoming contests?

Doing Trash to Treasure, where the emphasis is on using old stuff not buying a load of things to put in old stuff. I see a lot of entries where it mentions ordering items like electronics or 3D printing parts. Surely that defeats the point?

"no advanced tools" contest. Many authors, including myself, are using advanced machinery such as 3D printer, laser cutter, CNC and so on. Not everyone can afford or have them, so I guess, some simple contest like "Show your best while using only hand tools" would be great, as it will be much more easy others to repeat it.

We've run a few Hand Tools Only Contests now. Keep your eye open for the next time we do it :)

Like many of us, I have been involved in various non-profit organizations - all of which have required creative fundraising ideas. I think a 'fundraising' Instructable would be a great way to generate and share ideas for those of us looking for ways to raise money for great causes.

Do you remember, ages ago, the contest to create projects with specific titles?

That's how I ended up writing my highest-viewed project, so maybe we could try that again?

Also voting for that! I have drafted an impressive, 32 voice polyphony synth keyboard, which uses single, less than $2 cost IC for that :)

Agree. I have prepared an instructable, how to make precision, lab grade, thermostated orbital shaker, which costs more than $1000 new, but will cost you less than $100 with my design :)

A long time ago we had a Chindogu Challenge (the art of the unusueless invention). I don't remember how that one went. I will look that up later and mull this over.

This might be a little too specific, but perhaps we could do a music or a stereo contest in the future.

Oooooh i have several.
1) The Frugal . A hard 20-50$ limit on materials.
2) The Jack of All trades: A challenge where you must incorporate several dissimilar fields into the same instructable. (Pottery and technology, gardening and woodwork)
3) The Mission Instructable challenge: Get inspired by your favorite secret agent and make something fitting for a spy. (Martini not necessary but approved)
and some miscellaneous . Mad Science, The perfect taco(Yes, the noble taco deserves its own contest.), a contest where you either make a gift for someone you care about or solve a problem for them.

The first one is one that we often think about, but it is just hard for us to evaluate if people are being truthful.

The second one is like every contest we run! However, I think its interesting combining / requiring the use of two disciplines in a single contest.

And we already run the Spy Contest (or similar) semi-regularly. Off the top of my head, I believe the last iteration of it was something along the lines of "Secret Hiding Places"

We had a Mad Science Fair a long time ago, but I would definitely like to do that one again.

I was going to say there is no way we are going to run a taco contest, but the more I think about it, maybe you aren't wrong. :)

Instructables has a cool collaboration feature. How about a collaboration contest? - you need to work with another member (maybe from another country) to create something. I feel that the entry period may need to be much longer than traditional contests (maybe 1 year). Part of the Instructable could be documenting the collaboration. It might be a fun way to enhance the Instructables community...

Contests where the entry pool could be segregated? We use the contests in my high school design class and the students get frustrated competing against companies. So perhaps, a school level contest

In an ideal world, would you want to compete against other students in other schools or have your students compete against each other?

How many students do you typically teach each year?

In ideal world against other students. We already compete against each other. I teach about 120 kids per year

Measuring contest. Precise and accurate measurements are a big part of industrial everyday life. Show off your tools and techniques for taking measurements!

A contest in which we would see various ways of measuring a wide plethora of measurable (and traditionally immeasurable) quantities. Scales, rulers, stopwatches, micrometers, mood meters, heartbeat monitors, attention meters, etc.

A precision contest could be fun, but I worry it would be hard for us to evaluate entries and judge.

I'm not sure we would do this because there are so many contests that we are currently planning to run that you could potentially enter hacked devices into.

I'd like to do a soft robotics contest, but I am not sure it would get enough participation.

Would anyone else out there want to participate in this?
